Animals can feel just like we do – pain, fear, stress, happiness, and enjoyment.
When we take care of animals, we should think about how they feel, not just their ability to think. Humans get many benefits from animals, but we must always ask ourselves, “What does the animal need?”
Many animals depend on humans for food, shelter, healthcare, and even emotional well-being. Because of this, they are our responsibility, and as their guardians we must do everything we can to reduce their suffering.
Animals in our care have five basic needs for good health and well-being:
A Safe Home
They need a clean and comfortable place to live, with enough space to move and rest.
A Healthy Diet
They should get the right food every day, in the right amounts, and always have fresh water to drink.
Normal Behaviour
They should be able to act like healthy animals. This means they should be allowed to show their natural behaviours (like how they move, make sounds, or play).
It's important for owners to understand what is normal for their animals.
Companionship or Alone Time
They need the right company, either with other animals or alone, depending on what makes them happy and healthy.
Good Health
They should be kept free from pain and illness, and get help from a vet if they get sick or hurt.
