Choking happens when an object (food, bone, toy, etc.) blocks your pet’s airway, making it difficult or impossible to breathe. Difficulty breathing can also be caused by allergic reactions, infections, or injuries. Both are emergencies that require immediate attention.
⚠️ Signs
- Gasping or wheezing while struggling to breathe
- Pawing at the mouth
- Gagging or coughing
- Blue or pale gums (indicating lack of oxygen)
- Collapsing or becoming unresponsive
🏥 What to Do
If your pet is choking:
- Open the mouth and check for an object.
- Remove it carefully with tweezers or fingers—don’t push it deeper.
- If you can’t remove it, do the Heimlich manoeuvre:
- Small pets: Hold them against your chest, place a fist below the ribs, and give firm thrusts.
- Large dogs: Stand behind them, push upward below the ribs.
If you cannot remove the object, get to a vet ASAP.
